Around the Saint-Pierre Basin
Right into the centre, the canal leads to the Saint-Pierre Basin, framed by restaurants and terraces. You pick your aperitif with a view of the hulls, then walk up to Saint-Pierre Church and its soaring spire. The spot is photogenic at sunset, especially when the masts are reflected in the water. A distinctly different setting for an unusual first drink.
Rue Écuyère and Vaucelles
Rue Écuyère concentrates student bars and restaurants, with an always-lively weekend atmosphere. On the left bank, the Vaucelles district has a village feel, with independent cafés and lunchtime bistros. For a typical dinner, order a teurgoule, the slow-baked Norman rice pudding, or — for the more adventurous — the famous tripes à la mode de Caen.
Markets and big nights out
On Sunday morning, the port market enlivens the quays: fish, cider, teurgoule and local striped aprons. For nightlife, the Zénith hosts the big tours and the Cargö carries the rock and electro scene. On Lyad, people from Caen share their weekend outings; a chance to find someone to extend the evening with on a lit-up quay.
